Chat is the waste product of lead and zinc mining. Heavy mining in the town of Picher, OK has resulted in abandoned mine shafts and over 75 million tons of chat scattered about the town. Lead and other toxins have seeped into the groundwater, lakes, and ponds.

The town which lies between Miama (pronounced My-a-muh), OK and Baxter Springs, KS, is virtually deserted. On Quapaw Tribal land, the town became the center of lead-zinc mining in the early 1900s. In 1981, the EPA declared Picher a Superfund site, the most toxic in the US. Main Street. Good citizen Gary Linderman was the only pharmacist in town.

Picher and its neighboring towns of Treece, Kansas and Cardin, Oklahoma were the industrial center of the Picher Field, an enormous vein of lead and zinc that produced $20 billion in ore between 1917 and 1947. Over 1,400 mine shafts were dug in this area and the ore provided for the vast majority of the US bullets fired in WWI and WWII.

Picher was the most productive mining field in the Tri-State Lead and Zinc District (Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri) and produced more than $20 billion in ore from 1917 to 1947. Over 50 percent of the lead and zinc metal consumed in World War I came from the Picher Field.
